To The Finish Line: Texas state track championships

On May 3, the University of Texas at Austin hosted the TX UIL 5A State Championships. Under the relentless sun and the crack of starter pistols, athletes across the state came to showcase their talents. For many, this was not just a race but a culmination of early morning practices, tiring workouts, and persistence. This photo essay captures athletes, including Carnegie’s Laila Payne, who gave their all in a competition where every second mattered.

It is the start of a long competition day. Runners are strewn across the field, stretching, practicing and warming up as the audience fills in.
Runners soar over hurdles in impressive strides, exploding towards the 100m hurdle line. The crowd erupts into fragmented cheers as tensions rise.
Payne receives a 3rd place award in the hurdles, between her events. In 1st place is runner Kailyn Head (Denton Ryan), followed by runner Zoe Williams (Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill) in 2nd place.
A hush blankets the arena, thick with anticipation. The athletes are awaiting the start gun, preparing themselves for the 200m dash.
The gun sounds, and the runners take off. The crowd erupts into cheers as they approach the finish line.
Payne poses with her mom after the race. 1st place in the 200m dash was Daisha Shular(Seguin), followed by Sunmi Akinyeye (Frisco Heritage) in 2nd and Jada Stanford(College Station A&M Cons) in 3rd.
Athletes take their positions for the 100m dash. Their eyes are fixed ahead as they prepare for the burst off the starting block.
In the flash of an eye, the athletes take off, and Payne pushes off her track blocker with intensity. In 1st place was Zahria Bernard (Read Oak), followed by Daisha Shular (Seguin) in 2nd and Ryhan Balous (McKinney North)in 3rdmore
The sun starts to set as the competition comes to a close and athletes are enjoying the cool arena air.
