The CVHS boys’ basketball team had two more games to be played before completing the season without a loss. Their first challenge was a battle of defense versus DeBakey High School. Both teams struggled on the offense side of the game, but CVHS was able to come out with a 27-22 win.
“We made some halftime adjustments where we started a full-court press,” Junior Lucas Wang, a player on the CVHS basketball team, said. “We knew [DeBakey] had one player who could dribble, and when we stopped him, they only got two points thereafter.”
With that victory in hand, they traveled to play Energy High School in the season’s last game. The 40-37 win over Energy was one of the season’s tightest games, but the team kept its cool under pressure.

“It was very tiring,” Wang stated. “A lot of people didn’t want to rise early for the 9 a.m. game, but we just buckled down and played well. We don‘t like losing, so we kept on going.”
It is not easy to remain undefeated throughout an entire season, but CVHS accomplished just that by being consistent. The team played with dedication and discipline, and they set the tone for it right from the beginning.
“We were building a team from the very beginning,” Wang said. “We would hang out and shoot some hoops outside of school, and it brought us closer together.”
The team’s success was not only about skill, but also about strong leadership and accountability. According to team captain Andrew Lee, the players adhered to high standards during practices and games.
“Every time we missed a layup, we did push-ups,” Lee said. “The expectation was to make the easy points, and that helped motivate us throughout the season.”
This unified approach played a critical role in their undefeated run. Players consistently rose to the occasion, whether by making an extra pass, locking down on defense or executing key plays when it mattered most.
“It wasn‘t individual talent,” Wang explained. “We trusted each other and played as one. That’s why we didn‘t lose a game.”
For the seniors, the championship victory is the end of their high school basketball careers. Not many teams can claim that they went undefeated in their final year, and the leadership and efforts of the team played a big role in their achievement.
“This victory was well worth it,” Wang said.
The undefeated season was not only a testament to the team’s skill, but also to the bonds they formed along the way. Through dedication, leadership and teamwork, the CVHS basketball team left a lasting legacy for future players to uphold.
“We fought through the exhaustion and the tough games, and we came out on top.” Wang said.
