Submit an Op-Ed or Column
If you have a story idea you would like us to cover, please email Editors-in-Chief Ava Lim and Danielle Yampuler with your story idea.
If you would like to submit a story, Upstream News is interested in displaying as many diverse opinions as possible, but submissions need to follow these guidelines:
We will only accept op-eds (opinion pieces) and personal columns from writers who have never been on staff.
Topics for opinion pieces must somehow relate to the CVHS student population. For example, it cannot be an opinion piece on the war in Ukraine without some kind of relevance to the student population here.
Upstream News will not run any stories ridiculing students on the basis of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion, ethnicity, etc. Upstream News will also not publish any story attacking or targeting a specific student. Any attempt to submit an article in this vein will result in a refusal to accept any works from the writer, though this refusal can be disputed.
We will not accept any pieces created by anonymous authors unless the author has a genuine reason for their identity to be protected. Any legal obligations may prevent us from promising complete anonymity even then.
The author must work with the Upstream editorial staff on editing and revising their piece.
Pitches or completed pieces must include hyperlinks to sources used and mentioned.
Contributing writers will be given a contributor profile on our platform School News Online but will not get an account.
Any story written for Upstream News will be submitted for a Best of SNO award, unless requested otherwise.
To submit:
Conduct some preliminary research and send a developed pitch/ idea to the Opinion Editors Danielle Yampuler and Hagar Cohen, who will guide and develop a deadline for your submission.
For guidance on how to write an op-ed, please view this resource. For guidance on how to write a personal column, please view this resource.
Please submit your draft within the deadline agreed upon and then work with the opinion editors on revisions.
Please also submit a profile pic and a short bio for yourself to be posted online.
Your story will then be published in the next publication cycle.
